About Mt. Laurel, NJ

Located in Burlington County, Mount Laurel, New Jersey is very close to Philadelphia, PA. It’s so close, in fact, that it’s what’s termed an “edge city suburb,” or a town that used to be a suburb but has transformed into an entertainment and shopping district nearby an urban center. Simply put, Mt Laurel, NJ is a fun place adjacent to the City of Brotherly Love, offering both residents and visitors a lot to see and do.

Though it’s now a suburb, the town was founded in 1872 and named for a hill covered in laurel trees, using some land that was formerly Evesham Township or Marlton, NJ. The town remained a sleepy rural town until the late 20th century when Philly residents began moving into the area. This led to a debate about race and affordable housing, echoing greater struggles in the nation, culminating in the Mount Laurel Decision of 1975.

Since then, this edge city community has strived to offer both housing and all the modern amenities for its residents and visitors. As of the 2010 Census, the population of Mt. Laurel was just over 40,000. Area schools are highly rated; both rail and highways offer easy transportation; parks and nature preserves offer valuable greenspace; in short, Mount Laurel, NJ has a high quality of life for residents. They also offer a lot of fun experiences for visitors, such as the Garden State Discovery Museum, a children’s museum, and activity center.
